Easy Art Lessons for Subs

Here is a free art sub PowerPoint lesson for you at my  Teachers Pay Teachers shop: Art Sub Lessons.  This lesson is one I use with kindergarten.  We do lots of moving around making the shapes of lines as we look at the slides. TeachersPayTeachers requests that you make your free PowerPoints smaller than your "for pay" ones, but this is still full of good images and information for your students and subs.

Here are a couple of "easy sub lessons" from Dali's Moustache.  One is a third grade lesson about Jackson Pollack's action paintings.  The other is a fourth grade lesson called "crayon fireworks."

Another easy way to prepare for an art sub is to go to my shop, Art Sub Plans. I have created complete lessons in which all your sub has to do is read the slides and follow the directions.  They are full of visuals and are created to be used with the most simple supplies.  Pencils, paper and crayons are all your students will need to create imaginative works of art.

These are perfect for those emergency absences when you do not have the time to write detailed plans but want to leave quality plans for your subs.

Early Finishers Worksheet - Create a Turtle in Disguise

Here is a worksheet for early finishers that you, your art sub, and your students will have fun with.

Kids love drawing cartoon figures but they also like seeing reference material to inspire them.  This worksheet for early finishers has the lightly drawn outline of a turtle, surrounded by boxes of sample items a student might like to add.  They can add the designs given and combine them with ones from their imaginations.

Students end up with an original cartoon turtle in this no fail activity.

This is in my TeachersPayTeachers store, Art Sub Lessons, for just 99 cents.

Art Sub Idea - Easy Shape Tracing

This lesson would be great for an art sub with just a small bit of tweaking. I can't imagine leaving a lesson that includes black tempera paint, but there are work arounds.

From experience, I know that kids love tracing. Cans. Coffee lids. Flat tools. The more diverse, the better. Crayons are a perfect medium here and great to leave with subs.

Get inspiration from this gorgeous lesson from The Moffatt Girls.

Early Finishers Worksheet - Create a Frog in Disguise

Early finishers worksheets are great to have on hand. Subs will especially love them. When kids declare that their work is absolutely finished, it is such a help to hand them something creative to work on.  They can engage in a fun activity that gives them a creative outlet. Check this out at my TeachersPayTeachers shop here: Create a Frog in Disguise .

Ideas for Art Sub Plans

"The worst part of my job is preparing for a sub." That is a statement we can probably all agree with. You need to spend tons of time to describe even the tiniest of directions. That quote is from "Art Project Girl." She made it a little bit easier for you though, by posting this art sub plan.

Art Sub Plan - Creative Letter Drawings.

Ms. Nguyen had to start teaching at a new school with little or nothing in the way of supplies.  She came up with this lesson that used what little she did have.  Here is a simple lesson that a sub could possibly do.  Check it out at: Art with Mrs. Nguyen.

Art Sub Plan - Hand Creatures

Art Sub Plan - Hand Creatures

I love art lessons in which each student's art is uniquely their own . It is even better if you can find a sub lesson that achieves that. This lesson fits the bill well. Hand Creatures by Katie Weymouth Gonzalez.

Groundhog's Day Art Worksheet for Early Finishers

Groundhog's Day Worksheet for Early Finishers.

Those early finishers are extra tough for a sub to handle.  There are plenty of things you can give students to do to keep them occupied.  I make worksheets for those early finishers.  This one is for Groundhog's Day and it costs .99 at my TeachersPayTeachers shop.  You may find it here:  Groundhog's Day Worksheet for Early Finishers

The worksheet has the lightly drawn outline of a groundhog, on which the students add details.  There are also sample details they can refer to and add.

Now, I focus my work on art subs, but this worksheet can also be used by classroom teachers, art teachers and others.

Enjoy!

Maternity Leave - Art Sub Planning

I can only imagine what a headache it is planning lessons for maternity leave. (As if you did not have enough to do already!) My daughter was born before I got an actual teaching job and once I went into labor, I didn't think about work again until I had to go back.

In this post, "Preparing to Leave", Katie Morris explains some of the things she did to prepare for her maternityleave.

Art Sub Plan - Where the Party Pandas At?

This sub lesson is by Cassie Stephens. It is intended for the sub who is not an artist. There are step-by-step drawings of a panda for the students to follow and detailed instructions. It's super cute so give it a look. Here's Cassie's blog at "Cassie Stephens: In the Art Room."

If you want to follow that up with an early finishers' worksheet, here is a perfect choice.
